The holidays are "Picture Perfect" photo opportunities

The holidays are approaching quickly. :-) This is a wonderful time to practice getting pictures of friends and family (people) and all of that wonderful food. Yes, there IS a food category this year! :-)

Please look at the right of the page and under "Curriculum and Resources" you will find the new state guidelines for 2011. The county contest will follow these guidelines with the following exceptions:

1. There is NO entry fee for county
2. You may use 4X6 photos

3 Clover kids are welcome to participate

Please, be sure to look at the guidelines closely. There are a lot of new categories this year, and some old ones have changed or been removed. Also, they are only allowing 1 photo per category this time, regardless if it is black and white or color. So, choose your photo wisely. :-)

I will post the district guidelines as soon as we get them. Most importantly HAVE FUN!!!! :-) Mark your calenders for the next workshop scheduled for January 6, 2011. We will meet in the Extension Office at 6:30 pm.

Workshop and County Contest Information

Hello, Everyone :-)

Well, a new 4-H year is underway. It's going to be a great year!! :-)

OK, there are two workshops set for this year.

1. October 4th - 6:30 pm at the County Extension Office.

2. January 6, 2011 - 6:30 at the County Extension Office.

The County Photography contest has been set for the week of January 18th - 22nd. They will be displayed at the Jacksonville Public Library again this year. :-)

The deadline to enter the county contest is January 14, 2011. Have them to Willie at the Extension office by 5:00 pm that day.

I will post the guidelines, etc. as soon as they are up on the county website. :-)

There has been one addition to the categories. This year there is a "Miscellaneous" category. That means if you take a photo, and it does not fall under any other category already listed, then you can put it in this category. This will be color or black and white, just like the other categories. :-)

STATEWIDE PHOTOGRAPHY WORKSHOP PLANNED

Bell County 4-H is hosting a statewide 4-H photography workshop. The photography workshop will be held on June 21 and 22, 2010, at the Bell County Expo for any youth, ages 8-19. Bell County 4-H leaders, Harold and Melissa Carter, have collaborated with the Central Texas Camera Club and other area professional photographers to offer two days of interactive photo workshops for youth at all skill levels. Cost is $10.00 for each day ($20-full registration) which includes: lunch, snack, folder of information, a chance drawing for prizes, and a take-home project. Registration is available on the Texas AgriLife Extension Service-Bell County website at: http://bell-co.tamu.edu and click on Bell County 4-H Website and then Photography.

Many outstanding speakers and professionals will be sharing their expertise and skills about photography. Some of the sessions include learning how to use the camera still life composition, portraits and groupings, digital photography, how to build a light box demonstration, landscape/nature photography, and hot to prepare pictures for exhibition. We also hope to have a scrapbooking session on how to properly scrapbook and not harm your photos. The second day will be a field trip to the antique tractor fairgrounds where the youth will take pictures of tractors, old buildings, people in costume, and horses. Photography leaders will be helping the youth with staging photos and finding great photo opportunities at the fairgrounds.

To participate in the workshop a camera is needed as well as batteries and fill to practice taking pictures. You are also encouraged to bring 4 or 5 objects or collectibles to learn to set up your own still life photos. You may also bring a 4x5 print of one of your photos to learn how to make photo note cards. The workshop will be having a photo exhibit for you to display your photos. These photos must be mounted on foam board and Velcro fastened on the back along with your name and/or 4-H club or county.

Don't miss the fun! Parents who bring youth to the workshop are welcome to attend the sessions but must pay the $10 registration fee ($20-full registration) as well.

For more information about Bell County 4-H, please call the Bell County Extension Office at 933-5305 or email Micah Holcombe, 4-H Agent, at mlkarber@ag.tamu.edu or you can find more information about 4-H on the Bell County 4-H Website and click on Bell County 4-H Website.

Apology

To All Cherokee County Participants of the D5 Photography Contest,

I am genuinely sorry but somehow there was a mix up on the District Photography Contest entry deadline. Back in November or December, Wendi Emprimo and I were in my office planning the County Photography Contest when I realized that the District Photography Contest entry deadline had been posted as being three months later(March) than it had been in the last three years (December). I then called the District Office to confirm that the entry deadline had indeed changed. While on speakerphone, the District 4-H Specialist, Derrick Brutton told me that the contest entry deadlines was March 25th. Even thought the calendar said that it was the 24th, I took him at his word. Both Wendi and I remember this as I wrote it down on my Wall Calendar while we were still on the phone. I received a call on the morning of March 25th from the District Office to let me know that the online entries were posted for all of you who completed them, but they had no actual photos to go with them. To which I replied that they were in my truck and I would be bringing them over that afternoon. I was told that it was too late to bring in the photos and that my "people" could participate, but would not be allowed to place in the competition because we hadn't gotten them in by the deadline. This was all transpiring while I was on site at our County Stock Show. I tried, to no avail, to make the case for allowing me to bring them in that day. As I am the 4-H Coordinator, I should have posted a county deadline for this contest a week prior to the real deadline in order to get these photos to the District Office on time. My failure to do so has resulted in all of the Cherokee County entries for the District Photography Contest being disqualified. As a concession, I will be holding either a summer photography contest or project show so that your photos can be displayed and judged. Please accept my most humble apology for allowing this to happen. In the future, ALL District Deadlines will be accelerated by one week to avoid any similar situations. Please call my office 903.683.5416 if you wish to discuss this matter further; again my apologies...

Humbly and Sincerely,
W. Arnwine
